From the Associated Press:

Former Colo. Governor And Wife To Get Divorced

Former Gov. Bill Owens and Frances Owens are getting a divorce after more than 30 years of marriage and nearly three years after the couple reconciled after a separation.

A statement released to Denver newspapers Wednesday called the decision “private and mutual” and said the couple will remain friends.

. . .

The couple separated for 20 months beginning in 2003, with then Governor Owens moving out of their Centennial home and into the Governor’s Mansion. They reconciled in May 2005.

Neither has publicly stated why they separated.

. . .

Owens, a Republican who left office in January 2007 after serving two terms, is a vice chairman for Greenwich, Conn.-based RBS Greenwich Capital, which is part of the Royal Bank of Scotland. His role is global banking and markets as well as public-private infrastructure finance.

He also is an active partner in a firm that buys land for residential and commercial development, which he joined shortly after his term ended, and a senior fellow at the University of Denver’s Institute for Public Policy Studies.

Claims to fame: Former Governor of Colorado; divorcé; hypocrite

Moral apex: Killed a 28-year marriage.

Consequence: Devout Catholic who made “family values” the mainstay of his platform had to back out of keynote speeches to ultra-con groups such as Focus on the Family.

Suggested Bible reading for Mr. Owens:

I have forsaken mine house, I have left mine heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.

— Jeremiah 12:7
