Ed Schrock (R-Va.)

Ed Schrock (R-Va.)

Claims to fame: Former President of House Republican Freshman Class; founder & ex-co-chair of House Navy/Marine Corps Caucus and House Special Operations Forces Caucus; ex-U.S. Navy captain; Vietnam veteran; married “moral values” family man; practicing Baptist; anti-gay closet queer

Moral apex: Outed in 2004 by Mike Rogers, who dug up a recording of a personals-ad message Schrock left on a gay sex phone line.

Sad, sick evidence of self-loathing, internalized homophobia #1: He co-sponsored the misnamed Marriage Protection Act (formerly the Federal Marriage Amendment), which would amend the United States Constitution to deny the right of marriage to same-sex couples.

Sadder, sicker evidence of self-loathing, internalized homophobia #2: He was against protecting gay and lesbian Americans from employment discrimination.

Saddest, sickest evidence of self-loathing, internalized homophobia #3: Former Navy man Schrock favored “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” — i.e., opposed gays in the military, of which he was one.

What happened after he was outed: He pulled out of his 2004 bid for a third term in Congress. But he still wouldn’t come out, and won’t even acknowledge his outing.

Fun fact: Schrock received a 92% approval rating from the Christian Coalition.

Memorable quotes:

Uh… hi… I weigh 200 pounds, I’m 6′4″… blond hair…. very muscular, very buffed up… very tanned… Uh, I just like to get together a guy from time to time, just to… just to play. I’d like him to be in very good shape, flat stomach, good chest, good arms, well hung, cut… uh… just get naked, play, and see what happens. Nothing real heavy duty, just a fun time… go down on him… he can go down on me, and just take it from there. Hope to hear from you. Bye.

age, which was pushing 60 at the time)

In recent weeks, allegations have surfaced that have called into question my ability to represent the citizens of Virginia’s Second Congressional District.

Suggested Bible reading for Mr. Schrock:

But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?
