Jon Christensen (R-Neb.)

Claims to fame: Self-described “family-values conservative Christian”; anti-gay crusader; adulterer; divorcé

Moral apex: As part of divorce settlement, got his ex-wife to sign affidavit stating she was the one who had been “unfaithful.”

Head-shaker moment: Got engaged to former Miss America Tara Dawn Holland, who swore she was a virgin, saving herself for marriage (to Christensen, of course).

Republican mindset: Swore he would never “appoint a gay person to a position of leadership.”

Random acts of screwball Christianity: Passed out fliers denouncing Lincoln Mayor Mike Johanns (a fellow GOPer) of being “soft on pornography” — because a city cable co. ran movies showing (gasp!) bare breasts.

End result: Booted out of office by voters.

Bonus end result: Alienated fellow Republicans.

Memorable observations:

The Jon Christensen campaign has no moral base, no moral compass. It is win-at-any-cost politics and it is the worst of the worst … We are seeking the highest office in the state. We are not running for sophomore class president.

— Lincoln Mayor Mike Johanns

Nobody in the Republican Party of Nebraska can be proud of Jon Christensen’s conduct, and I hate to have to say that. I hope the people of the state will get out and vote and register their feelings on the conduct of this campaign.

— Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.)

The Christensen campaign has sunk to a new low in Nebraska politics.

— Rep. Doug Bereuter (R-Neb.)

Suggested Bible reading for Mr. Christensen:

Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

— Proverbs 3:29
